Choi Kwi Rye was my maternal grandmother who passed away in Dec. 2017 at the age of 96. A South Korean growing of age through the Korean War, she recounts her memories of living in Japan before the war and getting married when she was 17 years old in these recordings.
My grandmother helped raise me when I was in elementary school and a large language barrier existed between us. I could understand most of what she said in Korean but it was more difficult for me to respond back in her native tongue. I wanted to preserve her memory through this recording and some day be able to interpret all of the details she said.
This interview was conducted with my mother in 2013 when my grandma was 91 years old.
